QQQ: Bubble Bursting or Buyable Dip? Reading the July Correction

As of 2026-07-31 close. All levels and indicators reference that session; treat as a regime read, not an intraday call.

The Nasdaq-100 fell ~11.7% from its June peak ($748.65) to its July 29 low ($661.14), then bounced ~4% into month-end to close at $687.99. The question is whether that's a bubble deflating or a stretched market resetting. The evidence points to the latter — but with a valuation backdrop that leaves no margin of safety.

The setup

Metric Value (7/31) Read
Price $687.99 Below 50d MA ($715), above 200d MA ($645)
Drawdown −11.7% peak-to-trough First correction since March
Trailing P/E ~30.5 Forward ~27
VIX 15.99 Broad market calm
VXN (Nasdaq vol) 26.00 Elevated, above its 200d (24.5) — tech-specific stress
10yr yield 4.75% Rising, above 50d/200d — the mechanical headwind
S&P Shiller CAPE 41.3 Second-highest in history (dotcom peak 44.2)

Valuation bubble vs. bursting bubble — not the same claim

Valuation is genuinely stretched. A Shiller CAPE of 41 is a top-decile-of-all-time reading. What that reliably predicts is muted long-run forward returns and fragility to shocks — not a specific crash date. There is no margin of safety at these multiples.

But the July action is not a burst. A bursting bubble has a signature this pullback lacks:

The trigger was specific: a semiconductor/memory selloff on AI-capex profitability doubts — the "will this spending earn a return?" question. That's a fundamental worth respecting, but it read as a positioning reset, not a regime break.

The one variable that matters most

The 10-year yield, not the AI narrative. A CAPE of 41 and a 30x multiple only survive with a low discount rate. The 10yr at 4.75% and rising is exactly what compresses these valuations. Watch 4.8–5.0% — a decisive break there is a bigger threat to QQQ than any single earnings headline.

Bottom line

Expensive enough to call the valuation bubbly, but the July move is a rotation-driven correction with no panic signature — a buyable dip for those who can tolerate rate risk and add lower, not a fat-pitch bottom. The 10yr yield is the tell to watch, and $645 is the line that separates "correction" from "something worse."

Numeric caveat: trailing/forward P/E are approximate (Yahoo quote + Siblis Jan-2026 index figure), not recomputed bottom-up. CAPE and the selloff narrative are from sources dated 7/28–8/01.

Buy Strategy

This is disciplined dip-buying in an expensive market, not a washed-out capitulation bottom. Scale in against defined levels; keep dry powder because CAPE 41 offers no cushion.

  • Starter (current zone, ~$685–690): Small only, and only if you'd genuinely welcome adding lower. Price is above the 200d, so the long-term uptrend is intact.
  • Add on retest of $661 (7/29 low): Provided it holds without a VXN spike above ~30. A quiet retest is constructive; a fearful one is a warning.
  • Meaningful add at $645 (200d MA): The line where risk/reward improves — if it holds. This is the make-or-break level for the "correction" thesis.
  • Confirmation add on reclaim of $715 (50d MA): With VXN falling, a reclaim signals the correction is over; add for trend continuation rather than trying to catch the exact low.
  • Rate gate: If the 10yr pushes through 4.8–5.0%, pause new buying — multiple-compression risk overrides the technical setup.

Sell Strategy

Disclaimer: The strategy below represents personal musings and opinions, not investment advice. You are solely responsible for any trading decisions you make.
  • Trim into strength near the prior high (~$748): Given stretched valuation, a rotation market rewards trimming rips rather than holding for new highs.
  • Risk-off / reduce on a decisive break of $645 (200d MA) accompanied by a VXN spike above ~30: That combination is the actual burst signature. It is not present now, but it's the line that changes the thesis.
  • Cut tech-duration exposure if the 10yr breaks 5.0%: The mechanical headwind becomes primary.
  • Discipline over conviction: In a rotation regime, letting winners round-trip is the main way to give back gains. Pre-commit to trim levels.
